We have had messages from our family members from overseas. It is very exciting. Mason's uncle lives in Detriot. We tried to find Detriot on the map and then we looked on the internet to find out more. We found out that it is a big city in the USA and it is up by Canada.
Jackson's aunty lives in London. That is a long way away too. London is in England. It is a very big city too.
We have been practising athletics. We are getting very good at high jump and long jump. We are looking to sports next week.
This morning we had a go at writing all the words we know by ourselves. Mrs Tamblyn said we are very clever because we can all write heaps of words without any help!

Today we noticed that 2 of our tadpoles have started to grow back legs. We can't wait to see how much they will grow over the long weekend. Amie discovered we had a one-eyed tadpole! We thought a one-eyed tadpole might get eaten in the wild because it wouldn't be able to see hungry fish coming.
Paige brought a little blue bird's egg to school. Her Mum found it on the grass. We looked at some pictures of birds' eggs and think it could be a blackbird or thrush egg. But we are not sure.
Shyan has had her birthday and her big sister gave her a lovely pink make up box with lots of lovely new hair ties.
Have a great long weekend everyone. We have been enjoying everyone's comments.

Science Alive photos
We have put our photos into a movie, but we haven't finished arranging them yet and we want to add some more captions.
Science Alive
We learnt that there are different kinds of simple machines. They are:
- levers
- pulleys
- gears
- wheels and axles
- screws
- wedge
- inclined plane (ramp)
Some machines can be made up of several smaller machines. A can open made up of a lever and a wheel and a wedge. The handles are the levers, the bit that cuts is a wedge and the bit you turn is a wheel. Some can openers even have gears to help it turn around.
We learnt some new words like fulcrum and pivot. The fulcrum (or pivot) is the bit of a lever that stays still. We have levers on our bodies. our arms are levers and our elbows are the pivot.

Force and Movement

We have learnt that that forces make things move. This force is invisible. We can't see the force but we know it is there because we can see what it does - it can move things. It pushes and pulls things.
The wind is a force. We can't see it but we can see it pushing the trees.
Magnets are a force they can push and pull together. We played with some magnets and felt the way they either grabbed together or pushed the other magnet away.

It is Monday morning. We have all enjoyed our weekend. It is very exciting to open up our blog this morning and find that we have had comments from people from different parts of New Zealand and even from London! We have been looking at these places on the map. London is a very long way away.
We have a busy week ahead. On Wednesday we are going to the Science Alive classroom to learn about simple machines and what makes them work.
We will carry on sorting out the frog pond and Amie is going to teach us how to make origami frogs.
Brayden bought a snail to school. We are going to watch how it moves. We have noticed that it is similar to our water snails, but doesn't go in water.

It is Friday. We love Fridays. Fridays are special because it we have worked really hard through the week we get to play with the dress ups and the cars and the games! We alwaays work hard so we always get to do these things.
We go to our school assembly as well. We like assembly because we get to hear about what has been happening around the school and we sing our favourite songs. This week, Room 5 are doing assembly. I wonder what they will do for us?

Tadpole update
Mr Miles sent us an email and said we may have a frog pond. We have talked to our caretaker and he said he would help us. So we have chosen a spot that is safe, shady, but not too cold and next week we will dig a big hole for the pond.
We will need something to make the pond out of, some water plants and some plants to put around the edge for the frogs to hide in. We will also need some rocks.

Tadpoles
We think our tadpoles will grow into whistling tree frogs. We have been learning about them. We have found out that they are brown with a little patch of green. They hibernate in winter. They eat small insects like aphids The boy frogs do the whistling to find a mate.

Exciting News
We have got tadpoles. Oli bought a huge bucket of tadpoles to school. We have got a great idea. We want to build a frog pond at school. We found out that these are native tree frogs and that they are endangered in the wild. We thought if we build a pond we can help these frogs survive.
We looked on the Internet to find out what frogs need.
But before we can build it, we have to ask our principal if we can. So we will send him an email and hope that he says yes!
